Dietary Histidine and UV-Induced Skin Cancer

Project Description

Dr. De Fabo investigated the role of the dietary amino acid histidine in skin cancer development. Levels of a unique substance, urocanic acid, in the skin appear to be influenced by histidine levels in the diet. Increased urocanic acid levels in turn are associated with increased immune suppression resulting in skin tumors. The study sought to determine whether controlling the dietary intake of histidine will help prevent against skin cancer.
