WASHINGTON, DC — The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), is working with BIG Y Foods Inc. to raise awareness about cancer prevention during the month of October.
Big Y Pharmacy and Wellness Centers are offering free nutrition and lifestyle information in all 39 of its pharmacy locations in Massachusetts and Connecticut. AICR is one of the organizations being highlighted in this campaign and will provide research based guidance to their customers on reducing their risk of cancer.
“We are excited with this opportunity to share our life-saving messages with Big Y customers. As they go to the pharmacy department with health on their mind, it’s an ideal setting to show them how to take simple lifestyle steps to lower cancer risk” said Alice Bender, MS, RDN, AICR Director of Nutrition Programs.
AICR is delighted to be able to reach more people with the life saving information. AICR estimates that fully one-third of the most common cancers in the US could be prevented if Americans moved more, weighed less and ate more healthfully. That’s about 340,000 cancers every year that never have to happen. Add in not smoking and avoiding sun damage, and that figure climbs even higher – nearly half of US cancers could be prevented by changing our everyday habits.
