Dr. Kagan investigated the interaction between dietary antioxidants, vitamins C and E, BHT and BHA, and etoposide VP-16, a widely used phenolic antitumor drug. He sought to determine how different levels of these antioxidants may affect oxidative activation of VP-16 in K562 human leukemia cells and the extent of cytotoxicity of VP-16 in these cells.
