How dietary methionine influences lung cancer initiation and chemosensitivity

Project Description

The very early stages of lung cancer may be promoted by co-existing diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Preventing the earliest stages of lung cancer and improving therapy responses are the biggest unmet clinical needs for this deadly cancer type. A diet with reduced methionine content may prevent normal cells from becoming cancer and improve responses to chemotherapy. Dr. Brainson is using a genetic model of lung cancer in the laboratory to study the impact of low methionine diet on lung cancer development and chemotherapy response. Dr. Brainson hopes that this study will lay the groundwork for future clinical trials in lung cancer patients. The ultimate goal is to use low methionine diets in patients to prevent lung cancer development and improve treatment responses.
