Digital Lifestyle Intervention to Improve Normal Weight Obesity in Primary Breast Cancer

Research Type: Breast Cancer

Project Description

Abstract
Normal weight obesity (NOW) (BMI 18.5-24.9 and total body fat 35% or greater) is an under-recognized condition that affects 70% of American women. Women with NWO often have higher levels of insulin, C-reactive protein, and leptin—factors linked to higher breast cancer death rates, even if their BMI is normal.
Dr Iyengar will test whether a 12-month home-based digital lifestyle program (SurvivorSHINE™) can help women with NWO and breast cancer by reducing body fat while maintaining muscle mass. They will also test whether intensifying SurvivorSHINE™ with an initial period of dietician and exercise physiologist support will increase the impact of the program on biologic and patient reported outcomes.
