Sharon Karpel Kleiman was a woman of passion, energetic and a model of excellence. Her family described her as big-hearted, focused and motivated. She would not give into the circumstances in her life. As a school principal she advocated for her students, their families, teachers and staff. Sadly, she passed away from breast cancer in October 2006.
Following her death, her parents, children and family members created the Sharon Karpel Kleiman Memorial Fund to support breast cancer research. This meaningful tribute was their way to keep Sharon’s memory alive and continue her fight to rid women of breast cancer in our lifetime.
This past year, the Sharon Karpel Memorial Fund for Breast Cancer Research helped fund the cancer research project of Leena Hilakivi-Clarke, PhD, at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University- entitled “Role of genistein in reversing tamoxifen resistance by acting as HDAC and DNMT inhibitor.” Dr. Hilakivi-Clarke’s research seeks to determine whether genistein, a compound found in soy-based foods, can help women who are pre-disposed to develop resistance to tamoxifen, a commonly used cancer drug.
“Supporting research like this is an important way to honor my mother,” says Rachel Bernstein. “We know that the important work of AICR will fund breast cancer research far into the future.”
You can also honor a loved one by making a thoughtful gift. Investing in groundbreaking research and education will lead to a world with less cancer.
