Research Type: Multiple Sites Cancer
Project Description
Exercise and weight loss may lessen the negative effects of obesity and reduce cancer risk. Rural residents experience obesity-related disparities, but evidence-based weight loss interventions may not be feasible and effective for rural populations due to their unique characteristics. Dr. Focht is testing the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a 15-week, telephone-based weight loss intervention for rural populations. His research group will measure the impact of the intervention on body composition and inflammatory biomarkers in obese rural populations. Their findings will provide preliminary data for future, larger studies that center people living in rural areas.
