Research Type: Multiple Sites Cancer
Project Description
Squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are a common form of cancer of the skin and mouth. These cancers cause substantial illness, disfigurement, and healthcare costs. Dietary strategies could reduce cancer risk for people at higher risk due to sun, tobacco, or alcohol exposure. Dr. Capell’s group aims to test if eating specific polyunsaturated fats can cause the SCC cells to self-destruct, in order to slow or stop tumor growth in laboratory studies. If successful, diet could offer a cost-effective approach to reduce the need for surgery or other cancer treatments. Additional insights into the biology of these tumors may offer personalized nutrition strategies for people at higher risk of developing SCCs.
