Smart Scans, Stronger Futures: Using AI to Uncover CT-Based Body Composition’s Role in Pediatric Cancer Survivorship

Research Type: Multiple Sites Cancer

Project Description

More children are surviving cancer, but they face serious health problems in later years. However, it is currently challenging to predict which survivors will face serious health impacts. Changes in body composition (percentages of which the body is made of muscle, fat, and bone) may contribute to future health issues and a worsened quality of life. Dr. Yi’s group will use AI (artificial intelligence) to analyze routine CT (computer tomography) scans from childhood cancer survivors. They will link changes in the body composition from these scans to the survivors’ health outcomes to identify aspects of body composition associated with health risks in childhood cancer survivors. This research will help cancer survivors achieve better long-term health, reduce serious complications, and improve their quality of life.
