A Gala Tournament to Support Cancer Research
Elaine Marcus lives in a golfing community in North Providence, Rhode Island. As she and a growing number of her friends experienced cancer, she decided to organize a top-notch golf tournament to raise funds for cancer research.
“I happened to get AICR information in the mail and told our committee that I thought we should put the money into cancer research. After all, if it wasn’t for research, we wouldn’t be alive today!”
Elaine is an 8-year breast cancer survivor. “Cancer didn’t run in my family, but now it’s running rampant, with friends and people I know,” she says. Last year, that first tournament raised $11,000 for AICR and had 90 participants. Both the men’s and ladies’ leagues participated, in addition to the couples’ league. This year, the July event raised more than $13,000 and attracted about 100 golfers.

“It’s a huge project,” Elaine points out. “It’s hard to get it going. This year we started organizing it in March.” “I have great people on the committee,” she adds. “We’re working as hard as we can, with our hearts and our time, but we always want to do more.” All of us at AICR are deeply grateful to Elaine Marcus, her committee and the players who generously participated.
Thank you for your contributions to support AICR’s lifesaving research.
