AICR Awarded Grant from Safeway Foundation
WASHINGTON, DC — The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), has been awarded a grant from the Safeway Foundation to shape and pilot test a program designed to improve the eating and activity habits of older, low-income adults.
“Research now shows that tens of thousands of cancer cases in the US would be preventable with healthy lifestyle habits, like being active and eating a healthy diet.” said Alice Bender, MS, RDN, AICR Director of Nutrition Programs.
“This grant allows us to better understand how our overall healthy lifestyle program can be adapted to benefit a specific population of older adults to help lower cancer risk and improve their overall health.”
Working with Kim Robien, PhD, RD, CSO, Associate Professor, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, and graduate students at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington Unversity, the GW/AICR team will tailor AICR’s New American Plate (NAP) Challenge for Older Adults program to meet the needs of an urban older adult population, and then pilot test the revised program in Washington, DC. The 12-week NAP Challenge is based on AICR’s evidence-based recommendations to eat a diet with mostly plant foods, engage in daily physical activity and maintain a healthy weight to reduce cancer risk.
Overall, AICR estimates almost one-third of the most common US cancers are preventable by following their recommendations for cancer prevention.half of US cancers could be prevented by changing our everyday habits.
