Golf Tournaments to benefit AICR

Debbie Olivier Memorial Golf Classic

Many dedicated AICR donors like to show their support by making a contribution that also allows them to live our mission. One of the most popular ways to support cancer research and get some exercise is to host a golf event to benefit AICR. The Debbie Olivier Memorial Golf Classic, the Colin MacDonald Cancer Foundation annual May Golf Gala and the Michaywe Pines for Research golf tournament are three such events that have been supporting AICR for many years and we are so grateful for them!

The Debbie Olivier Memorial Golf Classic just celebrated its 12th year on August 1st. Mark Olivier – Debbie's son – and his wife Erin, along with several close friends, decided to host this tournament in memory of Debbie after her battle with breast cancer. The tournament is a fun way to "continue [Debbie's] legacy of giving."

The Colin MacDonald Cancer Foundation's annual May Golf Gala is hosted by Wendy MacDonald in memory of her husband, Colin. Inspired by the generosity of friends and family who had made donations to prostate cancer research in Colin's name, Wendy contacted AICR because of the resources available on our website. "[It] had been so helpful to me towards the end of Colin's life," she said. The tributes section of AICR's website also "allowed so many people, all over the world, to express their feelings on Colin's death." Wendy recently held their 3rd tournament. "Colin loved playing Golf, so this is a very fitting tribute to him and a fun way to help ensure that no one else will suffer as he did."

At the end of June, Judy Mason, the golf director for Michaywe Pines Golf Course, hosted the club's 3rd golf event to benefit AICR. Of the event she said, "So many people in our community have been personally touched by cancer – it really hits close to home. We support the American Institute for Cancer Research because its reputation is outstanding. We did research on a few organizations and AICR is the type of institute we were looking for that financially and educationally provided everything we wanted to support."

In addition to providing AICR with critical research funding, golf tournaments provide a great, low-impact activity that burns calories and uses considerable energy. We are grateful to the families and friends who organize, participate in and donate to all of the golf events benefitting AICR. If you are interested in hosting a golf event, or any other special event fundraiser, please contact Sarah at events@aicr.org or visit our events page!
