Short Chain Fatty Acid Metabolism and APC Initiated Colon Cancer (1995)

Title:

Short Chain Fatty Acid Metabolism and APC Initiated Colon Cancer

Key words:

fiber, short chain fatty acids

Research Institution:

Montefiore Medical Center

Location:

New York

Researcher:

Leonard H Augenlicht

Project Description:

Dr. Augenlicht used mice with genes that predispose them to colon cancer to study the molecular mechanism of the protective effects of short chain fatty acids, produced by fermentation of fiber in the intestinal tract. Based on his previous work Dr. Augenlicht tested if short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) correct defects in normal differentiation, mitochondrial gene expression and apoptosis.
