Mechanism of Action of Indole-3-Carbinol, a Dietary Chemopreventive Agent in Breast Cancer (1994)

Title:

Mechanism of Action of Indole-3-Carbinol, a Dietary Chemopreventive Agent in Breast Cancer

Key words:

indole-3-carbinol, estrogen, cruciferous vegetables

Research Institution:

Strang-Cornell Cancer Research Laboratory

Location:

New York

Researcher:

Raj K Tiwari

Project Description:

Dr. Tiwari demonstrated that indole-3-carbinol, a chemopreventive agent present in cruciferous vegetables, reduces the incidence and multiplicity of spontaneous mammary tumors in mice. Dr. Tiwari extended his studies, using estrogen responsive and non-responsive human breast cancer cells, to characterize the novel mechanism of action of indole-3-carbinol in conjunction with estrogen receptors or estradiol responsive factors.
