Dr. Niles studied the role of retinoic acid in prevention and treatment of certain types of cancer and the way these effects are mediated by nuclear retinoic acid receptors. He discovered that an important regulatory molecule, cyclic AMP, can decrease the amount of these receptors and potentially interfere with the action of retinoic acid.
