Dr. Barnard investigated the mechanism by which butyrate exerts rapid and potent effects on growth and maturation of colon epithelial cells. This effect appears to be mediated through a key growth-regulating gene, c-myc. Dr. Barnard�s studies sought to increase our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which butyrate affects c-myc as well as the degree of maturation of the colon epithelial cells.
