Maximizing the impact of tomatoes for prostate cancer prevention: The impact of tomato variety and carotenoid profiles. (2015)

Title:

Maximizing the impact of tomatoes for prostate cancer prevention: The impact of tomato variety and carotenoid profiles.

Key words:

Research Institution:

The Ohio State University (OSU)

Location:

Researcher:

Steven K. Clinton

Project Description:

Laboratory studies have found that lycopene-containing tomato foods reduce prostate cancer in animal models. Work from Dr. Clintons lab has shown that bioactive phytochemicals are more readily absorbed if the chemical structure of lycopene is in a particular configuration. Tangerine tomatoes are a particularly rich source of this type of lycopene and will be tested and compared with standard red tomatoes. Their goal is to use this information to better design tomato juice for future clinical trials of prostate cancer prevention.
