More Americans Eating On-the-Go

Making pizzaAbout one in five Americans are now grabbing their food and drinks on the run, not caring if it’s a snack or a meal, finds a new report published last week.

The report, How America Eats: Capturing Growth with Food on the Run, finds that 21 percent of Americans – totaling 66 million – say they just find something to eat, whenever they have the chance. Many of these eaters are single or part of two-member households. About half of these on-the-go eaters say they don’t consider food’s nutrition and calories.

And although about half say they enjoy cooking, the majority look for foods that are quick and easy to prepare, with little care if the food is a snack or meal. A third of these eaters prefer heat-and-eat or ready-to-eat foods rather than preparing options from scratch.

The report also finds that Americans who eat three-square meals a day are now the minority, standing at 14 percent. About a third of us eat those three meals with snacks; and slightly more than a quarter of people eat four to five mini-meals throughout the day.
