Calories from Alcohol Add Up
The average man drinks almost 150 calories a day from alcohol -- the same amount of calories contained in one can of soda -- according to a government survey released this month. Women consume an average of 53 calories per day from alcoholic beverages.
The survey used data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey during 2007–2010. Participants recalled what they had drunk over the past 24 hours during in-person interviews.
On a given day, consumers of alcoholic beverages obtain approximately 16 percent of their total caloric intake from alcoholic beverages. On average, men aged 20 to 39 consume the greatest number of calories from alcohol –174 daily calories – compared to other groups. An average 12-ounce can of soda contains approximately 150 calories.
Men’s favorite alcoholic drink of choice is beer; women’s top choice is wine.
The calories US residents consumed from alcoholic beverages do not differ by race and ethnicity.
